by 以外を用いる場合

 能動態の主語は、受動態にした時に by -- で表すことが多いのですが、なかには by 以外を使わなければならないものもあります。
 
  Snow covered the ground.
   （雪が地面を覆っていた。)
 
を受動態にすると、
 
  The ground was covered with snow.
 
 となります。ほかの例としては、
 
  History interests her.
   （歴史が彼女の興味を惹いている。)
 
は、
 
  She is interested in history.
 
となります。
 
  Eveyone knows the big mouse.
   （誰もがその大きなネズミを知っている。)
 
は、
 
  The big mouse is known to everyone.
 
となります。大きなネズミの名前は「ミッキー」です。
 
その他の例として、
 
  They were caught in a shower.
   （彼らはにわか雨にあった。)
 
  The room was filled with the smell of a fart.
   （部屋はオナラの臭いでいっぱいだった。)
 
  The boy is satisfied with the smell.
   （その少年はその臭いに満足していた。)
